Companionship care at home
Supporting people within the communities of Clacton, St Osyth and the Tendring Area
Why is companionship care important?
Many of us have several friends and family members that we speak with regularly and we don’t consider how life may feel without them. However, there are times that this circle of friends and family may reduce, or sometimes, disappear altogether. Through no fault of our own, we may find ourselves feeling lonely, vulnerable and isolated.
The fulfilment of our psychological need for companionship is essential for our wellbeing and flourishing. At certain points in our lives, we are more likely to suffer from a need for companionship.
We often take companionship for granted.
There are many reasons people can feel lonely:
Whatever the cause of your loneliness, it can be detrimental to your physical health, your mental health and your independence.
We understand the impact that social isolation has on your well-being.
We believe that everyone has the right to enjoy the companionship of another person, whatever their situation – this is a human right.
At Distinguished we realise there is a difference between care and friendship. That’s why we offer a unique companionship service. For every one of our clients using this service, we will do our utmost to find a companion that shares your interests. One of our team will take the time to find out about you and what your ideal companion will be like – after all, we’re all different and want different things from a friend.
Perhaps you’d like someone interested in the Arts?
Maybe you’d like someone who will accompany you for a look around the shops and a coffee?
Perhaps you’d prefer someone who can read out the crossword to you and get the brain ticking?
Or maybe just someone who makes you laugh again.
Whatever you’d like to do we will try our very best to find someone you will look forward to spending time with.
You may feel you’d benefit from companionship but also need other services. That is why we make sure that all of our companions have the relevant training and knowledge to assist you in a whole variety of ways. Whether you’d like some help with meal preparation, trips to appointments, or just general housekeeping, our companions are happy to help.
Did you know...
We are more likely to feel lonely as we get older
When we think of what happens as we get older we often think of the physical ailments that can afflict us. Aches and pains seem like the best we can hope for. But, there is another, and less spoken of, consequence of ageing – loneliness.
Loneliness is often the result of social isolation. Physical changes as we age can often mean the things we used to take for granted; driving, going for tea with a friend or just visiting family, become more and more difficult.
The impact this has can be devastating for a person who has had an active social life in the past. Older people are also more likely to be suffering loneliness after losing their spouse. Figures suggest that between 30 and 35% of people over 65 experience loneliness. For the over 80s this rises to around 50%.
Alongside this, studies have shown that loneliness increases the incidence of physical problems such as high blood pressure and disability. One study suggests that loneliness is as much of a risk factor to our health as smoking 15 cigarettes a day.
Not only affecting physical health, loneliness is shown to be a risk factor in developing poor mental health too. The incidence of cognitive disorders, dementia and depression are all higher in those that have been in need of companionship.
